There are numerous interesting monuments from the First World War in the area for you to visit, including the Ploegsteert Memorial, which can be reached on foot through the forest (2.5 km), the Pool of Peace in Wijtschate (10 km) and Messines Ridge Cemetery (6 km). There are beautiful drives through the Ypres Salient: you can stop at the most famous monuments and will pass through tranquil landscapes that tell of the region’s tragic history. Visitors can also enjoy local museums where there are fascinating stories and artefacts to be discovered. Heuvelland, Ypres and even Lille with its beautiful city centre are just a stone’s throw from the Au Bois Du Gheer hunting lodge.
Nature
The beautifully authentic hunting lodge is located at the edge of Ploegsteert Forest, an oasis of calm and greenery. A footpath that starts near the hunting lodge takes you through the idyllic forest. In the summer you can relax by the lake on the Prés du Hem estate just across the border in France (5 km). Go for a walk, bicycle ride or romantic carriage ride and enjoy the scenery; or look out for deer, birds and other wildlife and discover hidden gems in the forest. The area offers a unique nature experience that’s breathtaking in every season. Perfect for relaxation and adventure!
Sport & leisure
There are several cycle routes that pass through or skirt the forest. They connect together in a network of major and minor cycle routes, the most famous being the Flanders Fields route. The River Leie, which also has beautiful bike rides along its banks, is 4 km away. A superb 41 km mountain bike route runs through Ploegsteert Forest, linking up with other challenging routes through Heuvelland. (Kemmelberg is about ten kilometres away). Winter sports enthusiasts will be thrilled by the indoor ski slopes of Ice Mountain in Komen (approx. 10 km).
